Congressman Nick Langworthy Calls Out Governor Hochul’s Crippling Scoping Plan for NYS Agriculture Industry

February 17, 2023

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Nick Langworthy, with support from New York Farm Bureau and the New York Congressional Delegation, sent a letter to Governor Kathy Hochul on the Climate Action Council’s most recent advancement of its Scoping Plan and their desire to transition to electric vehicles. This radical plan ignores the reality that our farmers rely on a variety of different vehicles at both the farm and distribution levels, and most state agricultural producers do not have access to charging stations, the money to purchase EVs and would be severely hamstrung by the overall unreliable operating systems that would transport perishable goods.

“Governor Hochul is waging war on New York farmers, and it appears she won’t be happy until she’s driven them all out of business. First, she imposed devastating labor requirements on them, and now she thinks our farms should run on Teslas. Forcing farming operations to switch to unreliable, incredibly expensive, and hard to maintain electric vehicles just to fit into her woke climate agenda will have a catastrophic impact on the agriculture industry and bottleneck our supply chain. I’m proud to lead the fight against this hairbrained, dangerous proposal with my colleagues in the New York delegation and our partners in the New York Farm Bureau. As a member of the House Agriculture Committee, I am going to fight this tooth-and-nail,” said Congressman Langworthy.

“New York Farm Bureau appreciates members of the New York Congressional delegation highlighting the importance of the agriculture's role as part of the state’s Climate Action Council's scoping plan in mitigating climate change. There continue to be concerns with the plan and how agriculture could meet certain environmental parameters, as outlined in the members' letter. New York Farm Bureau will continue to work with both state and federal officials on climate policies that capitalize on what farms are already doing well while also meeting the future needs of our food system and climate,” said New York Farm Bureau President David Fisher.

Congressman Langworthy not only has the support from NYFB President David Fisher and fellow House Agriculture Committee member, Congressman Marc Molinaro (NY-19), but also has Congresswoman Elise Stefanik (NY-21), Congresswoman Claudia Tenney (NY-24), Congressman Michael Lawler (NY-17), Congressman Brandon Williams (NY-22), Congressman Nick LaLota (NY-01), and Congressman Anthony D’Esposito (NY-04) in support of this letter.
